At the Doorstep of the First National Military Park
Chickamauga was incorporated in 1891, named for the Tsikamagi Cherokee who occupied the area — then called Crawfish Springs — before the 1838 Trail of Tears. It grew as a textile-mill town around the Crystal Springs Bleachery and Print Works into the 2010s.
The city sits immediately south of the Chickamauga Battlefield, site of the September 1863 Battle of Chickamauga and part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park — the first national military park in the U.S., established in 1890. Chickamauga runs its own independent school district, uncommon among small Georgia towns.
