Rural Character, East of Chattanooga
Apison is an unincorporated rural community east of Chattanooga, with no city hall, downtown district, or traffic signals. The first recorded land grant in the area went to the Swisher family in 1841; when the railroad arrived in 1881, the stop was renamed Apison after large deposits of Apison shale rock found along the tracks.
The community retains a distinctly rural, larger-lot feel while also being one of the faster-growing new-construction areas in the region, about 15 miles from the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant.
