Overview

A Historic Chautauqua Town on the Cumberland Plateau

Monteagle began in 1870 when Scottish-Canadian temperance activist John Moffat purchased over 1,000 acres on the Cumberland Plateau; the settlement, first called 'Moffat Station,' was incorporated as a town in 1962. Unusually, Monteagle spans three counties — Grundy, Marion, and Franklin.

The town is best known for the Monteagle Sunday School Assembly, a gated, Chautauqua-style summer community founded in 1882 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982, and for its location on I-24's notorious 'Monteagle Mountain' stretch between Chattanooga and Nashville.
