Overview

The Carpet Capital of the World

Dalton began as a settlement called Cross Plains and was renamed in 1847, the same year the Western and Atlantic Railroad reached town; Whitfield County was created in 1851 with Dalton as its seat. The city sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is the second-largest city in northwest Georgia.

Dalton is known worldwide as the 'Carpet Capital of the World' — a title tracing to Catherine Evans Whitener's revival of hand-tufted chenille bedspreads starting in 1895, which grew by the 1950s into a machine-tufted carpet industry. More than 80% of America's tufted carpet is still manufactured within 100 miles of Dalton, and Shaw Industries, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, is headquartered here.
