Overview

Home of the First Major Railroad Tunnel in the American South

Tunnel Hill began as a community called Doe Run, was incorporated in 1848 as 'Tunnelsville,' and renamed Tunnel Hill in 1856 for the Chetoogeta Mountain Tunnel — a railroad tunnel bored through the mountain and completed in 1850, the first major railroad tunnel in the American South.

The tunnel and town played roles in two Civil War events: the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase passed through en route to Ringgold, and the 1864 Battle of Tunnel Hill was fought here during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, with Sherman using the nearby Clisby Austin House as his headquarters. The restored 1850 tunnel is open to the public today at the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center and Museum.
