Overview

Catoosa County's Seat, Steeped in Civil War History

Ringgold was founded in 1846 and incorporated in 1847, named for U.S. Army Maj. Samuel Ringgold, killed at the 1846 Battle of Palo Alto. The Catoosa County seat sits on Chickamauga Creek between Lookout Mountain and Taylor's Ridge, along the old Western & Atlantic Railroad corridor now followed by I-75.

Ringgold is known for its dense concentration of Civil War history — the 1863 Battle of Ringgold Gap and the bullet-scarred Ringgold Depot are both still-standing landmarks — and today functions as a small commuter town about 17 miles from downtown Chattanooga.
