Overview

Atop Walden Ridge, Overlooking the Tennessee River

Signal Mountain sits atop Walden Ridge on the southern Cumberland Plateau, overlooking the Tennessee River Valley and downtown Chattanooga roughly 1,000 feet below. The name comes from Signal Point, used first by Native Americans and then by Union troops as a signal-relay and observation station during the 1863 siege of Chattanooga.

The town grew out of a resort community developed by C.E. James starting in 1913, complete with the Signal Mountain Inn, a trolley line, and an 18-hole golf course by 1918. It was formally chartered on April 4, 1919, and today is known for its schools, its scenic overlooks, and its quiet, small-town feel a short drive from downtown Chattanooga.
