Bradley County's Manufacturing Hub, Home to Lee University
Cleveland was established as the Bradley County seat in 1838 and incorporated in 1842, named for Revolutionary War militia commander Colonel Benjamin Cleveland. The area was central to Cherokee Nation history — the Cherokee held their national council at nearby Red Clay from about 1830 to 1838, before removal along the Trail of Tears.
Today Cleveland is a manufacturing hub in the Great Appalachian Valley, home to more than 150 manufacturing firms and employers including Whirlpool, Mars Wrigley, and Duracell. It's also home to Lee University, Cleveland State Community College, and the international headquarters of the Church of God.
