Overview

A Former Cavalry Post at the Edge of the First National Military Park

Fort Oglethorpe began as a U.S. Army cavalry post established in 1902, named for James Oglethorpe, founder of the Georgia colony. The post trained cavalry troops through both World Wars — Dwight D. Eisenhower served there as an instructor in 1917 — before closing in 1946; the surplus land became the civilian city, incorporated in 1949.

The city straddles Catoosa and Walker counties, and the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park — the first national military park in the U.S., established in 1890 — occupies its southern two-thirds, putting residents directly adjacent to protected federal parkland.
