Overview

Walker County's Seat, Rich in Civil War History

LaFayette was founded in 1835 as 'Chattooga,' the seat of the newly formed Walker County, and renamed in 1836 for the Marquis de Lafayette, the French aristocrat who served under George Washington in the Revolutionary War.

The city's well-preserved downtown square includes three individually listed National Register sites tied to the June 1864 Battle of LaFayette during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, and today LaFayette is home to a major GE Appliances/Haier manufacturing campus employing 2,000+ people.
