Overview

An Independent City Surrounded by Chattanooga

Red Bank began as 'Pleasant Hill' and was renamed in 1881 when a post office was established, chosen for a red clay ridge visible from the postmaster's home. It incorporated in 1955 — initially as 'Red Bank-White Oak,' merging the Red Bank and White Oak communities — as a defensive move against forced annexation by Chattanooga under a new state annexation law.

Today Red Bank is a fully self-governed city entirely surrounded by the city limits of Chattanooga, just 5 miles from downtown. Dayton Boulevard is its main commercial corridor, home to a growing scene of independent restaurants and bars.
