Marion County's Seat, on Nickajack Lake
Jasper is the county seat of Marion County, formed in 1820 on lands acquired from Betsy Pack, daughter of Cherokee Chief John Lowery, and named for Revolutionary War hero William Jasper. The town sits in the Sequatchie Valley where the Sequatchie River meets the Tennessee River.
Nickajack Lake, a TVA reservoir, borders the town to the south, giving Jasper a genuine lake-town character with boating, fishing, and swimming close at hand — along with Nickajack Cave, a seasonal roosting site for endangered gray bats.
