Two Coal-Mining Towns, Merged on Chickamauga Lake
Soddy-Daisy is an incorporated city formed on April 22, 1969, when the separate communities of Soddy (north) and Daisy (south) merged by citizen referendum. Both grew up around coal mining — the Soddy Coal Company was founded in 1867 and the Daisy Coal Company in 1881 — before declining after the Great Depression.
The city sits along Walden Ridge with an inlet of Chickamauga Lake on its eastern edge, about 16 miles north of Chattanooga. It's also home to Poe's Tavern, built in 1819, which served as Hamilton County's first courthouse and, in 1838, as a Trail of Tears way station for roughly 1,900 Cherokee people.
