Hamilton County's Original Seat, on Chickamauga Lake
Harrison is an unincorporated community named for President William Henry Harrison, developed near Vann's Ferry, a Cherokee-era river crossing. It served as Hamilton County's original seat of government from 1840 until the seat moved to Chattanooga after the Civil War.
Much of the original riverside town was flooded when the TVA completed Chickamauga Dam in 1939–40, forming Chickamauga Lake; submerged foundations of 'Old Harrison' are occasionally visible during low water. Today Harrison is home to Harrison Bay State Park, Tennessee's first state park.
