Overview

Home of Lodge Cast Iron and the National Cornbread Festival

South Pittsburg was platted in 1886 by Nashville banker William Duncan, who organized the South Pittsburg City Company hoping the town would become an iron-manufacturing center to rival Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was formally incorporated in 1887 with John G. Kelly as its first mayor.

Today South Pittsburg is best known as the home of Lodge Cast Iron, founded here in 1896 and still operating two foundries in town, and as host of the annual National Cornbread Festival every April, which celebrates the town's cast-iron cookware heritage with a signature cornbread cook-off.
