Home to the Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival
Birchwood is a small, unincorporated rural community straddling the Hamilton–Meigs county line, along State Routes 60 and 312 (Birchwood Pike) northeast of Chattanooga. The area has deep Cherokee and Trail of Tears history — Cherokee leader John Jolly operated a trading post on nearby Hiwassee Island, and Sam Houston lived in the area for about three years starting in 1809.
Today Birchwood is best known regionally for the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge and the annual Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival, and for the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park at Historic Blythe Ferry, a National Park Service-recognized Trail of Tears site.
